HOW TO USE LAYERS IN PENCIL SOFTWARE

HOW TO CREATE AND MOVE LAYERS

On the left lower corner are your layers. You should place different parts of your drawing on layers as needed. Here's how.

Moving Layers
You can move layers up or down. On the left lower corner are your layers. Click and hold then drag the layer you want to work on. The layer on top is always behind the other layers

Even tho it seems weird the layers on top are behind the other layers.

You can always move a layer where you want it.

The layer on the bottom of the list is the one shown on top of your actual drawings.
Create some layers by clicking the plus sign beside Layers (left lower corner).

HOW TO RENAME YOUR LAYERS

I like to rename my layers so I know I am on the right layer. If you double click on a layer button a popup displays so you can change the name.

I also like to use a name that clearly identifies my layers. Here is a good way to do it.

I label my background layer simply ...background. If I'm using a bmp layer as a background I name it backgroundB.
If I use a vector layer I use the name backgroundV.

For a vector outline layer I name it outlineV.

For a preliminary bitmap layer for sketching, I name it sketchB.

You can use any naming system you want and it will save you a lot of problems.

HOW TO TURN YOUR LAYERS ON AND OFF

You can quickly turn layers on and off for viewing or editing purposes.

On the left side of each layer button is a small circle. A black circle indicates a layer is active and you can edit it.

A gray circle indicates that a layer is visible but not the active layer for editing purposes.

A white circle indicates the layer is turned off completely.
